This paper is presented as part of this on-going discussion, focussing narrowly on Schelmann's definition and classification, which appear to have won too wide an acceptance in the past 2 decades and have overemphasized the role of in situ weathering as opposed to lateral transport of regolith materials in the development of laterite.
