Calcium loading of quartz sandstones during construction : implications for future decay

Damage to quartz sandstones in polluted urban environments is frequently associated with the presence of calcium salts, especially gypsum. The aim of this study is to examine the possibility that non-calcareous quartz sandstones can be loaded with calcium from lime mortars during construction, and the potential for later conversion of this into calcium salts with a polluted environment. Construction of test walls show that this loading does occur, but that is restricted. Of possibly greater significance, is that mortar accumulation within pores significantly reduces permeability. This may contribute to the decay of individual blocks.
