This contribution aims at comparing conventional approaches, sustained by the modern cultural background, and the approaches of postmodernity. Reasoning is based on the distinction between the ontological, semiotic and epistemological levels. It leads to considering the landscape as a critical component of the discourse on the representation, and to distinguishing three approaches : the modern, the late modern, and the postmodern ones.
