Climatological classification of severe wind-driven rain events affecting the southern United States

Description :
This paper follows recent studies of wind-driven rain (WDR), and statistically defines a severe WDR event. The research suggests a classification for severe WDR events by association with larger scale weather systems. The study incorporates data for the period 1971 to 1995 and, from these data, the analysis reveals that severe WDR events are confined mainly to the southern United States and occur most frequently in the cold and transition seasons. Extratropical cyclones are the most common synoptic-scale weather systems associated with severe WDR events. The cyclone types are referred to as Colorado Lows (CLs), Gulf Lows (GLS) and Texas Lows (TLs).
