The research task was to analyze the development of the research-didactic staff of geographers and links in the context of a substantial increase in enrolment of geography students in Poland in the years 1990-2000. There were significant differences among geographical academic centres in the development of their educational function as measured by student enrolment and the number of academic teachers. The analysis shows that the principal geographical centres giving their opinions for academic promotions and hence exerting an influence on the quality of the new staff are invariably those that stand out for the number of degrees and titles received, and that have the highest research potential in the country. - (BJ)
