The causes and consequences of the development of settlement structure in the frontier districts are studied, since the early Middle Ages. The critical changes took place during the period of industrialization and subsequent urbanisation. The process is shown in the synthetic part of the article, even to the exclusion of settlements that were demolished as a result of the open cast brown-coal mining. - (MS)
