The article presents the socio-economic changes that have occured in rural areas of Podhale post-1989, in line with the development of the new systemic conditioning. Considerations centre on the region's demographic situation, as associated with the considerable growth in the population, as well as the noted changes in employment structure. The most important directions to the transformation in the rural economy are then characterised, with the main focus being on : the modernisation and development of the tourist base, the development of private (craft, trading, transport and other) firms very much associated with tourism, and the activities taken up both at home and abroad by local people, by way of periodic emigrations undertaken to earn income. Also subjected to analysis are changes in agricultural land use, notably the consequences as cereal and potato cultivation are limited and the area of grasslands increases, and trends in livestock rearing. - (BJ)
