Observations of mesoscale beach evolution are reviewed : observations of beach change; nearshore bar systems; long-term datasets; mesoscale modelling. As engineers and other marine scientists become increasingly interested in issues of scale, coastal geographers, will need to be careful that their traditional territory is not taken over by researchers from other disciplines.
