Fluvial geomorphology of Indian rivers : an overview

The contributions made to the understanding of the special characteristics of monsoon-dominated rivers in India are reviewed. The distinctive characteristics of the 2 major river systems of the Indian region are described. A summary of the studies on the morphology and behaviour of alluvial and bedrock rivers, and the sediment load dynamics is given. Then, the studies on the flood geomorphology of Indian rivers and the spatio-temporal aspects of floods are described. The role of large floods in determining the channel morphology and sediment transport is briefly reviewed. Finally, a brief review of the impacts of human interference in the fluvial systems is given.
