The phenomenon of headwater catchments and valley fills in the context of southern Africa, but with specific reference to the central Great Karoo is examined. Comparisons are made to similar environmental, geographical and historical context of headwater fills in Australia. Central Karoo headwater catchments respond rapidly not only to human induced degradation, but also to rehabilitation. - (AJC)
