Description :
The AA. studied a piston core (TTN057-13-PC4) from 53°S in the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean to reconstruct the Holocene history of Antarctic surface water in the South Atlantic. The core is suited for paleoclimatic studies because of its high sedimentation rate in the Holocene and its position relative to strong hydrographic gradients in the subantarctic South Atlantic. The AA. measured multiple proxies including oxygen isotopes of diatoms and foraminifera, February sea surface temperature (SST) and sea ice cover using diatom transfer functions. The results provide evidence for a rapid change in surface water properties about 5000 cal yr B.P.
