Interrupted transition and urban development in Albania - the case of Tirana

South eastern European countries on their way to Europe : geographical aspects

HENKEL, R.

Description :
Over the last 15 years, Albania has been faced with a period of drastic transformation. Since the political change of 1990/91, this transition process has been interrupted several times. To some extent, urban development in Albania seems to be a manifestation of the latent political instability in the whole region. The paper has its focus on selected elements and remarkable tendencies concerning the period of transition in general and their influence in the Tirana area in particular. Examples of the latter are the distribution of retail trade, the beginning formation of a central business district and the enormous sprawl of the Tirana-durres conurbation. - (IfL)
