After giving an Indochina chronology, the A. follows with the physical description of the Mekong river and proceeds to show how the Mekong was discovered and explored since the 19th century. He mentions lengthily about the scientific missions of the French explorers (Henri Mouhot, Doudart de Lagrée, Francis Garnier, Auguste Pavie, Louis de Carné, Louis Delaporte) up to lake Dali in the Chinese Yunnan. Acknowledging these efforts, the Royal Geographic Society of London gave a gold medal to Francis Garnier in 1870. - (GL)
