Chinese secret societies have been present in Thailand for centuries. The author explains the history of the triads in this country from the early 19th (when Thaï official records began to mention the Ang-yi) to the early 20th centuries. These associations, the first type of trade and welfare unions, were hostile to the Christian religion. They were also political and economic associations dealing with opium, illegal alcohol, gambling and prostitution. For this reason they have been described as a total social fact. In 1897 when registration became necessary for all Chinese organizations some preferred to go underground. Since then many second-generation Chinese have climbed the social ladder to become full member of the Thaï society. - (GL)
