The aim of the article is to develop an understanding of infrastructure as being shaped by the attempt to overcome constraints set by space and time. It is argued, that it is necessary to produce constantly new infrastructures and material settings in order to achieve accelerations in time - but every material setting implies to freeze certain levels of temporary flexibility. Therefore, while the produced built environment reduces barriers in time, it is at the same time contradictory to the tearing down of temporal barriers. A consequence is the constant creative destruction and devaluation of the built environment in order to create a new, modernized spatial ensemble. An example for this tendency is the development of the harbor of Hamburg. - (IfL)
