The article describes the hazards of high water on the upper Rhine between the 12th and 16th century and the treatments of the neighbours with these events : the measures for river construction as reaction on the development of landscape as well as planning in providence for the future protection. The dynamics going out from the river stipulated an appropriate dynamic treatment of its neighbours. Another focus is on the different social formations of the medieval society and their distinguish ambitions and possibilities to the configuration of the river landscape : the peasants and fishermen, the citizens of the affected cities, and the ecclesiastical and secular landlords. - (IfL)
