The article presents important documents of the most disastrous high water in the Central German region (Western Saxony, Southern Saxony-Anhalt, Eastern Thuringia) from 1500 to 1900 and the substantial socio-economic effects of these catastrophes. The authors differentiate between short-, medium- and long-term effects. In all of these cases high water had lasting negative effects on the population and economy in the flood areas. Concluding the reactions of the sovereigns and governments after the flood events are described. - (IfL)
