In all fields of everyday life the correct, unambiguous and multilingual acquisition of geographical names plays a significant role with regard to the names'function as an aid of orientation and communication. Geographical names are used as means of access and key data to further spatially referenced data. However, in contrast to the evident importance of geographical names, the common relevant issues dealing with them have as yet not been given due consideration in not a single European standard. The EuroGeoNames project is intended to tackle this problem and designed to establish, in cooperation with the responsible national surveying and cadastral authorities of the European countries involved, an information network for official, multilingual geographic names within Europe. - (IfL)
