Settlement of embankments in permafrost regions in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau

Description :
This paper first reviews the causes of settlement of embankments built over permafrost. Limitations of the present evaluation methods for each cause are presented. Then, using 2 case studies, of a highway and railway on the Qianghai-Tibet Plateau respectively, the 3 different processes (thaw settlement, creep induced settlement, freeze-thaw induced settlement) are verified and an equivalent permafrost table is proposed.
