Desertification is a problem that is affecting Italy, too. In this article the A. explains its causes within the geographical context of the Mediterranean basin, and denounces the primary role of arid climate in the growing alteration of the organic subtances of the soils. The article also presents some important activities carried on, with the help of several research institutions, by the United Nations Organization through specific projects aimed at fighting droughts and desertification. - (NF)
