Coastal response to extreme wave events. Hurricanes and tsunami on Bonaire

Auteur :
SCHEFFERS, A.

Description :
The dynamic geotectonic setting of the Caribbean basin with the Antillean island arc is predestined to create strong tsunamis with rather short recurrence intervals. This is not only revealed by historical documents over the last 500 years. Field observations identified strong Holocene tsunami in the southern Caribbean, and on Bonaire in particular. The tsunami were date to the last 4500 years. The evidence is mostly coarse debris in the form of ridges, ramparts of clusters of large boulders up to 200 tons. Evidence for storm compacts have been identified as well. This material is smaller in size, better sorted and large boulders are missing. These findings may serve as the basis of a better risk evaluation within the Caribbean and emphasize the necessity of establishing a tsunami warning programme. - (L'A.).
