Global cotton crisis and sustainable development. Case study : opportunities and limits for conversion from continental to organic cotton production in Tanzania

The study provides an overview of the global cotton production and trade, problems associated with conventional growing methods and their alternatives as well as option producers in developing countries facing the crisis of subsidies in the north. It explores the philosophy and theory of sustainable development and sustainable agriculture as an alternative production paradigma in particular. It focuses on the economy in Tanzania and deals with the role of cotton production in the pre- and post- colonial period, outlining the policy framework, farming methods, and the evolution of the cotton and textile industry. In addition, the thesis examines the history and experience of organic cotton production in the Meatu district in Tanzania, showing the economic stimulus of the project, production methods and efficiency comparisons. - (L'A.).
