The common methods of geography concerning the solution of practical problems usually refer to a checklist of alternative solutions. Variant solutions are listed and examined according to their applicability. The quality of a solution depends on the expertise of the person in charge and is subject to the limited human power of imagination and judgement. The research domain of Artificial Intelligence provides a rich methodological set of techniques which may increase the efficiency of problem solving in geography. By employing such techniques to the domains of geography - a step that has scarcely been made up to the present - computers are enabled to find optimal or at least very close to optimal solutions to pragmatic problems idependently. - (IFL)
