Provenance of Upper Pliocene conglomerates of the Mutignano Formation (Abruzzo, Italy) : implications for unraveling the uplift history of the Central Apennines external zones

Auteur :
RUSCIADELLI, G.

Description :
A provenance study of the Upper Pliocene conglomerates along the external sector of the Apennine chain front provides new information about the exhumation of positive structures during the chain building, and gives new insights about the role and the amount of regional uplift during post-thrusting flexural tectonics. The proveance of conglomerates indicate that the most rapid rates of uplift and the definitive exhumation of the carbonate ridges occured during the late syn-thrusting stage, with topographic elevations of about 1500-2000m during the Late Pliocene. This suggests that the amount and rate of uplift due to the Upper Quaternaly post-thrusting reginal flexure are notably less than previous estimates. - (NF)
