In the formely socialist states of the Carpathian region a natural depopulation, an intense regional mobility, an increasing loss of ethnic identity and a significant ethnic restructuring has been observed over the last fifteen years. The article attempts to sketch the regional ethnic structure and its recent changes with the four countries in the study region. Data on ethnicity formed the basis of the research, data concerning mother tongue, which looks back on a long historical tradition, was also used. - (IFL)
