Informal living is not at all rare as a post-Socialist phenomenon of the transformation process in the big cities of Eastern and South Eastern Europe. The connotation of poverty and marginalisation is often inherent in the idea of informal living itself. But, in the Albanian capital of Tirana it encompasses the entire range of social gradations in society, from informal quarters of the upper class, over illegal midlle-class residential areas, to poor squatter quarters of the lower class. The article takes the example of industrial squatter groups to showcase a special form of informal living and describes the distribution of property, the origin and the living conditions of these squatters. - (IFL)
