Mosses are used to monitor the metal accumulation in terrestrial ecosystems. Germany participated in three European-wide Heavy Metals in Mosses Surveys. By example of the German surveys 1995 and 2000 the article concentrates on two important aspects of environmental monitoring : (1) the extrapolation of measurements data to surface estimations and (2) the aggregation of the resulting element specific surface data to metals integrating nominal indices which reflect regional accumulation categories. For that variogram analysis and ordinary Kriging were used. The estimated data were aggregated by means of two cluster techniques. - (IFL)
