Since September 2002 the international research project CAESAR : Cooperative applied environmental systems research of urban-rural interface (Sustainability and land use in the Havana region, Cuba) is investigating the complex environmental problems in Cuba's capital province, the Provincia Ciudad de la Habana. The article presents some results obtained from the first-year study, where the whole province covered at the scale of 1:50.000 was researched. The focus is on geoecological landscape classification, the status or stage of degradation of units identified and their potential for agricultural land use. The paper ends with recommendations on water supply, wastewater treatment and disposal of wastes. - (IFL)
