The central question that is asked in the article is how and with which means society can feel at home in (urban) space and which strategies can bring out the potentials that are inherent in art for this purpose. The special issue seeks to consider this question in different facets. It is based on a concept of space that goes beyond the categories that are usually taken up in the journal Informationen zur Rautmentwicklung and includes the category of identity. Furthermore different levels of scale are considered that result in different roles for art in each case. The discursive autonomy of art must be respected in this context, nevertheless the social character of art must be questioned. - (IFL)
