Economic and fiscal instruments as well as urban development instruments are most likely to be suitable for the quantitative reduction of land claim. However, instruments of nature conservation policy can fulfil an important complementary function in the framework of a policy mix, which they have not adopted to the possible and sufficient extent so far. The article describes opportunities for corresponding improvements in landscape planning practice consist among other things, e.g. the more intensive treatment of the protected asset land or area and an improved use and linkage of the data bases that are already available today. - (IFL)
