Description :
The article considers the structural and functional aspects of polycentric structures in the Rhine-Main region. Based on current research work in the project Polynet, the metropolitan region is subdivided into six functional urban regions (FUR's). Taking the locational networks of regional firms of the knowledge-intensive service sector as examples, patterns of connectivity and the linkage intensity at the different scale levels can be determined, following the methodology of the Globalization and World Cities Study Group and Network (GaWC). In an overall view a complementary internal structure of the polycentrically organized metropolitan region Rhine-Main becomes apparent. - (IFL)
