There is a functional and historic relation between central regions and peripheries. Using the eastern Baltic region during the medieval period as an example, the dynamics and interrelations within and between the two and the strategies of development and innovations in the periphery during the process of colonisation are investigated. The study focusses on the driving forces and processes of a well developed central region with tendencies of expansion on one hand, and a colonial settlement structure and economy in a corresponding periphery on the other. - (IFL)
