Description :
The AA. first outline the nival-glacial mechanism of cirque initiation and development, and discuss some difficulties in reconciling this view with the reported characteristics and distribution of cirques. Following this they state their hypothesis and its implications, and describe and explain the characteristics of rock slope failure source geometry in relation to external (usually seismic) triggering events. They then test the hypothesis by considering its ability to rationalize the reported sizes, shapes, spatial distributions and orientations of cirques. Finally they explore some of the further implications of the hypothesis.
