Description :
Textural, compositional, physical and geophysical determinations were carried out on 111 beach and dune sand samples from 2 areas in New Zealand : the Kapiti-Foxton coast sourced by terranes of andesite and geywackes and the Farewel Spit-Wharariki coast sourced by a wide variety of paleozoic terranes. This study demonstrates how the presence of plagioclase grains with magnetic inclusions is a good indicator of river control in a coastal area and how the content of monomineralic opaque grains might be the result of local longshore coastal processes in beach and dune sands.
