This paper focuses on the present state and future potentials of wine tourism around Lake Balaton which may play a complementary role in the development of the tourist industry of the region. Apart from Budapest Lake Balaton is traditionally the most popular tourist destination in Hungary. Tourism has radically changed around the lake since 1990. The total number of tourists has strongly decreased, prices in the region have grown drastically and became unaffordable for average domestic and international tourists. New branches of tourism need to be developed in order to preserve the tourist function of the region, one of them could be wine tourism. - (JS)
