This article summarises the first results of a longer experimental study testing the capabilities and the reliability of the radio isotope trace technique on arable land in Hungary. Recent concern regarding the problems of soil degradation and erosion has highlighted the need for quantitative data on soil erosion rates on agricultural land. The use of environmental radionuclides, as means of estimating rates of soil erosion and deposition is attracting increasing attention. - (JS)
