The aim of the paper is to discuss the issue of territorial communities in a large city and to propose a categorisation of those structures and a notional systematisation thereof. To achieve this aim, the discussion adopts a systems approach to the city whose starting point is the concept of the territorial social system. The issues presented subsequently include : (a) basic territorial social structures in the city : sub-neighbourhood, neighbourhood and local community ; (b) basic internal relationships : isolation, coexistence, co-operation ; (c) basic external relationships : withdrawal, interest, involvement ; (d) basic territoriality-oriented relationships : negation, neutrality, belonging. - (BJ)
