The article presents the current situation as regards research into tor morphology. The most important points of view on tor development are presented in relation to : the single-stage model, double-stage model, periglacial theory and hillslope processes theory. Furthermore, the state of knowledge on tors from Poland was recapitulated, with particular attention being paid to the Sudety and Carpathian Mountains. Contemporary knowledge on landscape development suggests that the origin of tors should be conceived as a multiple process, by which different types of morphogenesis overlap with one another. - (BJ)
