The primary aim of this paper is to highlight the importance of geostatistical methods in plant ecology and biogeography and to review related issues, concepts and methods. A further aim is to assess the approaches available to assist with spatial rate of change analysis and boundary detection in the context of community and ecosystem boundaries and to provide pointers for future research.
