Review and analysis of slow mass movement mechanisms with reference to a Weardale catchment, N. England in Erosion budgets and their hydrologic basis.

Auteur :
DONOGHE, D.

Description :
Four principal mechanisms have been postulated to produce slow mass movement (s. m. m.) in hillslope soils : pure shear, viscous flow, expansion and contraction and particulate diffusion. In this paper the theoretical and physical basis of each mechanism is breafly discussed in relation to transport-limited slopes and the evidence with which mechanistic models may be quantitavely assessed is analysed for a small (35 ha) upland catchment in Weardale. A new quantitative analysis of a pure shear mechanism is described using field measurements and laboratory experimentation.
