Description :
There are major changes in the tectonic geomorphology of the Hikurangi margin along its length. In the north all the typical forearc, arc and back arc elements occur| in the south there are no arc or backarc elements even though the subducted slab is present. These differences manifest greater and lesser degrees of coupling of the two plates (oceanic Pacific plate and continental Australia plate) in the southern and northern regions, respectively.
