Case study of the Sambre river. During low stages a canalized river consists of a series of compartments in which sediment transport is fully controlled by man. The reduced channel slop and the corresponding low stream velocities undermine the natural transporting capacity of the river in such a way that injected sewage matter from factories and towns can settle down. Navigation activity causes the so formed sediments to be transported downstream. Finally the resuspended matter is accumulated in front of locks and near the banks. - (L'A.).
