From the 633 towns of the GDR, 425 belong to the category mentioned in the title. 90 per cent of these towns have less than 10 000 inhabitants and accomodate 12.4 per cent of the GDR population. The article describes the small town as a location of industry, as a local centre of spatial relations of work and supply between town and hinterland, as a place of living, as a health resort, as a location of agricultural production. - (IH)
