Based on two pollen profiles from alluvial sediments, the evolution of vegetation is correlated to the settlement history of the Lower Rhine District. The palynologic data suggest that this area was already cultivated in the neolithic period and has been continually populated since Roman Times. These results confirm and supplement the archaeological and palaeoethnobotanical findings.
