Analysis of the dynamics of African vegetation using the normalized difference vegetation index

Normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), displayed from images at a resolution of 8 km (cloud cover effect and atmospheric variation being reduced) is plotted against time. Different cover types appear to have typical profiles linked to phenology. The resultant pattern of NDVI values is analysed viz. cover type and local rainfall. 1983 and 1984 images are compared showing the greening up in Sahel, Kalahari and East Africa. (CB)
