In the G. D. R. the share of open-cast mining production in the total mining production is 93 per cent. From this, about 60 percent account for brown-coal production. The article deals with problems of areal requirements, growing volumes of rubbish, ground-water lowering, and the management of post-mining landscapes. - (IH)
