Marine terraces, active faults and tectonic history of Iwo-jima.

Iwo-jima is a volcanic island situated 1 200 km south of Tokyo and is known by its very rapid uplifting (more than 10 cm per year). Marine terraces occupying nearly the whole island are classified in more than 20 treads, the highest of which is 120 m above the present sea-level. The history of uplift is followed by documents, maps, 14C dates of coral remains and geodetic data. Distribution of active faults is shown by field studies and air-photo interpretation. The close relationship between active fault zones in Chidorigahara isthmus and the mode of elliptical uplift is pointed out.
