Carl O. Sauer, philosopher in spite of himself

Auteur :
ENTRIKIN, J. N.

Description :
Published work and unpublished correspondence and addresses by Carl O. Sauer are the bases for an examination of the internal coherence and the external sources of his mature viewpoint of social science. This viewpoint was constructed on a distinctive philosophy of science that Sauer defended throughout his career in contradistinction to his frequent criticism of methodological and epistemological debate in geography. His philosophy was influenced significantly by contacts with anthropologists at the University of California, Berkeley, and by his training in an appreciation for the natural sciences.
