Settlement patterns and landscape change: The Late Neolithic and the Bronze Age of the Marais Poitevin area of Western France

Geomorphological and settlement evidence is used for a consideration of the relationship between changes in the landscape and patterns of site distribution during the period 2800. 600 BC. Distribution maps show that the Late Neolithic and Bronze Age sites are concentrated along the edges of areas of Wetter land, possibly meaning prehistoric land-use strategies involving exploitation of both marshland and limestone plateau resources. These sites have been abandoned. Over the course of a millenium and a half there was a general shift on the northern side of the Marais Poitevin in a Westerly direction may be due to increased flooding of the inland part coupled with the greater fertility of the Western marshland.
