An assessment and synthesis of the territorial investigations related to recreation and tourism in Bulgaria. The factors generating recreational needs, as well the recreational territorial system in the country and its subsystems (resources, material base, recreational flows, cadres) are characterized. The attempts at tourism regionalization are critically reviewed and suggestions made. The managerial and applied aspects are treated in the scope of the National Master plan and by main types of environment: sea-side, mountain, urban and suburban.
